Antwerp Synagogue

Antwerp-Synagogue

This Antwerp Synagogue is influenced by moorish buildings and has been build by the Jewish congregation. It is known under several names: The Hoofdsynagogue, Main Synagogue.

And also as the Dutch Synagogue and Hollandse Synagogue because it was founded by the descendants of Ashkenazi Jews from Holland.

Address: Bouwmeesterstraat 7
Architect: E. Stordiau & J. Hertogs
Build: 1891 - 1893

Antwerp has about 15,000 Jews and one of the largest ultra-Orthodox and the city's 30 synagogues are all Orthodox.

It was damaged by a German V-bomb in 1944. It was repaired in 1958 and it is a protected monument since September 17, 1976.

The synagogue is only used for Rosh Hashana and Yom Kipour. Guided tours are possible by appointment.br>br>br>br>
